How does romance work in The Witcher 3?
Geralt has two main romance options in The Witcher 3: Yennefer and Triss. At the end of the day, only one of these sorceresses can partner with Geralt when you finish the game and its expansions.
However, there are a number of other women that Geralt can be involved with – but they are short-term relationships at best. In this guide, we'll break down all of them and the impact they have on the game (if any).
The Witcher 3 – all romance options
Below you'll find a list of all the romance options available to Geralt in The Witcher 3, along with everything you need to do to start or continue each relationship.
This guide is relatively spoiler-free. We will try not to spoil any specific details of the story.
Yennefer
Alongside Triss, Yennefer is one of Geralt's main love interests in The Witcher 3.
- There are three (3) key dialogue options you need to select to fully date Yennefer
Geralt and Yennefer are already close at the beginning of the game, but only later in the main story will you be able to solidify your love for each other. Once Geralt boards Skellige, he'll be reunited with Yennefer in a scene not to be missed.
During the main quest 'The King Is Dead - Long Live the King', Geralt will go to a party with Yennefer. The quest eventually ends in a fight with a monster, and you'll be given a key dialogue choice. (1) Choose to kiss Yen, and once you're back in her room, continue to flirt with her. This will open the Yennefer romance route.
After advancing further in the main story in Skellige, Yen will ask Geralt to see her on the island of Larvik. This triggers an optional quest called 'The Last Wish'. At the end of this mission, you will have another key dialogue option. (2) I agree with Yennefer. Doing so leaves Yennefer as Geralt's main love interest.
Later in the main story, in Kaer Morhen during the quest 'No Place Like Home', you will have another opportunity to connect with Yen through a choice of dialogue. (3) Choose to follow Yen to her room to trigger the final romance scene between her and Geralt.
triss
Alongside Yennefer, Triss is one of Geralt's main love interests in The Witcher 3.
- There are two (2) main dialogue options you need to select to create a full-on romance with Triss
In the previous two Witcher games, Triss is Geralt's main love interest, but in The Witcher 3, the two haven't seen each other in quite some time. Geralt will be reunited with Triss in the city of Novigrad as part of the main story.
During the main quest 'Count Reuven's Treasure', Triss will ask Geralt to see her. Doing so opens an optional quest called 'A Matter of Life and Death' (which, admittedly, doesn't seem optional). During this mission, you will be presented with a key dialogue choice. (1) Choose to kiss Triss. This opens up the Triss romance route.
Completing 'A Matter of Life or Death' opens up another optional quest called 'Now or Never' a little later in the game. Go see Triss again to start this quest. In the end, you will have another important dialog option. (2) Tell Triss to stay and then tell Triss you love her. In doing so, Triss becomes Geralt's main love interest.
Yennefer and Triss
If you lock Yennefer and Triss as Geralt's main love interest (selecting the option key of dialogue (2) on both romance routes - nothing else matters), so we're sad to say you'll ruin your chances with both. Later in the main story, Geralt will be abandoned by Yennefer and Triss - although you have a pretty funny scene for your troubles.
Keira
Keira isn't Geralt's main romance option, but the two can enjoy a night out together if you want.
The romance with Keira has no impact on the rest of the game and the other romance options that Geralt might pursue.
- There is one (1) key dialogue choice you need to select to date Keira
Geralt will meet Keira as part of Velen's main story. After completing the main quest 'Wandering in the Dark', Keira will ask Geralt to come see her at her house. Visiting Keira will trigger an optional quest called 'A Towerful of Mice'. Complete this quest to open up another optional quest called 'A Friend's Favor'.
During this quest, Keira will present you with a key dialogue choice. (1) Accept Keira's offer. This will lead to a scene where Geralt and Keira have some fun in the moonlight.
Jutta
Jutta is a romantic option that can be found in Skellige. Geralt can spend a night with her if he wants.
The romance with Jutta has no impact on the rest of the game and the other romance options Geralt might pursue.
- There is one (1) key dialogue choice you need to select to date Jutta
Jutta can be found on Faroe Island in Skellige. Talk to her and she will give you a task (this quest is not always the same based on other tasks you may have already completed). This opens an optional quest called 'Iron Maiden'.
Complete Jutta's task and you will have to fight her. Defeat her without using potions, bombs or signals and she will be grateful for a fair fight. She then asks you to meet at her house for the evening.
Go to Jutta's house in the village of Harviken in Faroe. Talk to her and you will be presented with a key dialogue choice. (1) Agree to Jutta's proposal and you'll have a romance scene with her.
Madame Sasha
Madame Sasha is a romantic option that can be found in Novigrad later in the game. Geralt can spend a night with her if he wants.
Romancing Sasha has no impact on the rest of the game and the other romance options that Geralt might pursue.
- There is one (1) key dialog choice you need to select to date Sasha
Later in the game you will find an optional quest called 'High Stakes'. Requires Geralt to enter a Gwent tournament at Passiflora in Novigrad. Note that you will need a reasonably strong Gwent deck to have a good chance of winning the tournament.
However, to date Sasha, you don't really have to win. Beat Sasha at a game of Gwent by playing with her, or simply agree to help her. At the end of the quest, she will invite you to dinner. (1) Agree to her proposal and you'll have a romance scene with her.
Shani
Shani is a romantic option in the Hearts of Stone DLC. Shani only appears in this expansion, and outside of Yennefer and Triss, she offers the deepest romance available in The Witcher 3.
The romance with Shani has no impact on the rest of the game and the other romance options that Geralt might pursue.
- There is one (1) key dialogue choice you need to select in order to date Shani
Near the end of the 'Dead Man's Party' main quest, choose to stick around. Geralt will be tasked with bringing Shani a gift. Give her flowers, mead or brandy and you'll have the opportunity to date her. There is a slight difference in how the romance scene plays out if you bring her a drink. Let's just say it's a little tastier if you give her the flowers.
When you are at the beach with Shani, you will be presented with an important dialogue choice. (1) Tell her you want more and you'll have a romance scene with Shani.
ayanna
Syanna is a romantic option in the Blood and Wine DLC. Syanna only appears in this expansion. While her romance route isn't as deep as Shani's, she still has more to offer than Geralt's other adventures in the main game.
Romance with Syanna has no impact on the rest of the game and the other romance options Geralt might pursue.
- There is one (1) key dialogue choice you need to select to date Syanna
During the main story of the Blood and Wine DLC, Geralt will have the choice to rescue Syanna. Choose to enter it, for lack of a better word, prison, and you will find it inside. Continue through this quest and towards the end, after defeating a boss, Syanna will present you with a key dialogue choice. (1) Accept Syanna's offer and you'll have a romance scene with her.
Other romance options
Outside of the individual romance options listed above, Geralt can also visit three different brothels whenever he wants. Two of these brothels are found in Novigrad in the main game, while the third is found in Beauclair in the Blood and Wine DLC.
In these brothels, Geralt can hire a prostitute of his choice for a relatively low amount of gold. By doing this, you will have an animated scene and you can repeat this process as many times as you like.
Hiring hookers does not affect the rest of the game and the other romance options that Geralt can pursue.
