This time we brought a slightly different list. Below you'll find the 16 best online RPGs that don't fit into the concept of MMO (massive multiplayer online), that is, you can play them online with other people, but without the possibility of interacting with different unknown players while you explore the worlds virtual. Check out!
Diablo III
Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Mac OS Classic e Microsoft Windows
No presentations. The third edition of the most famous and diabolical hack and slash in the world is a perfect example of an online RPG without being an MMO, since it wants internet connection even in single-player mode. In addition, like previous titles, the game has a cooperative mode in which up to 4 players can team up to advance in the story. Being able to fight monsters with friends while coordinating attacks and strategies is one of the best ways to play Diablo 3, especially if you play on the higher difficulty levels.
Valheim
Valheim is one of the newest phenomena in the survival genre, but it has all the classic RPG elements. In addition to farming and building mechanics, the game has several attribute systems that you evolve as you play more and more, being able to create very customized characters. The game also has numerous items and weapons with their own characteristics, as well as enemies and bosses that will not leave any RPG fan dissatisfied.
Monster Hunter: World
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows
Monster Hunter World is undoubtedly the most successful game in the series and its popularity continues to grow. The game brings together all the characteristics of a first-rate action RPG, with its vast open world, numerous character customization options, lots of content and support for using mods. Regarding the online aspect, the game allows up to 16 players to team up to defeat a single monster, in the best raid boss style.
Genshin impact
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS e Microsoft Windows
Genshin Impact is an action RPG heavily inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, both in graphic identity and mechanics. With a plot and characters worthy of anime, the game is very charismatic and with very flashy visual effects. At first glance the game looks a lot like an MMORPG, but the only way to play online with other players is to invite them to join your world (or accept an equal invitation). That way, players can farm items and battle together.
Stardew Valley
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS e Android
Stardew Valley is an RPG/farming simulator that offers much more content and fun than meets the eye. In addition to being an extremely addictive single-player game with lots to do at all times, the co-op mode manages to add even more fun by allowing you to carry out your tasks on the farm together with up to 3 friends.
Borderlands 3
Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Google Stadia, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS
Borderlands 3 is the third title in a franchise full of fast-paced action and flashy visuals. The game follows a "Mad Max" theme and has very captivating characters and a plot full of dark humor. The game is a perfect combination of shooter and RPG (something very unusual), and has a cooperative mode that allows you to experience all the fun of this dystopian world with friends.
Path of Exile
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Mac OS and Microsoft Windows
Path of Exile is a hack and slash so similar to Diablo that much of the community considers it a better sequel to the series than Diablo 3 itself. The difference here is the much higher difficulty level that appeals to more hardcore players. In multiplayer mode, it is possible to form groups of up to 6 players to complete missions and defeat challenges. In this mode, of course, the difficulty level goes up even more.
Terraria
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Playstation Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS and Windows Phone
Terraria, "Minecraft in 2D" is a game similar to Stardew Valley in some ways. The game may seem simple at first glance, but it offers an extremely vast content with lots, lots of things to do, discover and unlock. Just like in Minecraft, you can destroy and build the entire scenario and craft countless items and equipment. In online mode, it is possible to play cooperatively with other players or even battle with others in PVP matches.
Neverwinter Nights
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac OS Classic
Neverwinter Nights is a series of online role-playing games with mechanics directly taken from the Dungeons and Dragons system. The gameplay basically takes place in the form of missions that take you through the campaign. As you progress, you can unlock many new items and abilities and evolve your character (as in any RPG). The highlight here is the online mode, which allows players to create worlds and act as RPG "Masters", where it is possible to add up to 96 simultaneous players.
Torchlight II
Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac OS e Mac OS Classic
Torchlight II is a hack and slash that finally moves away from the dark theme so common in other games of the genre. The game gets much closer to classic RPG elements with brightly colored backgrounds and flashy, colorful special effects on every attack and spell cast. With fast-paced combat and support for using mods, the game isn't far behind titles like Diablo or Path of Exile. In online multiplayer, it is possible to play cooperatively with up to 6 players and there is also a simple PVP mode.
Divinity: Original Sin II
Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, macOS e Microsoft Windows
Divinity: Original Sin II is considered one of the best RPGs of all time due to the richness of the content, the high level of interactivity and the complexity of the combats. The game follows the same lines as most games in the genre with various classes, skills, customization options, primary and secondary quests, etc. In online mode, it is possible to join up to 3 players to play cooperatively or participate in PVP battles between teams.
Grim Dawn
Platforms: Microsoft Windows
Another quality hack and slash. The only really relevant difference between Grim Dawn and Path of Exile and Diablo is the story. With very similar mechanics and visual identity, the game allows you to choose two classes and combine their characteristics and abilities to create something very customizable. Combat also has more colorful and eye-catching visual effects than other games.
Outward
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows and Linux
A very different RPG from most. In Outward we don't control a hero, but a normal character without great battle skills. The game also combines several elements of survival and it is necessary to worry about many aspects such as hunger, cold, diseases and even indigestion! In online co-op mode, a maximum of 2 players can play together.
Dauntless
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Android e Microsoft Windows
Dauntless is an RPG very similar to Monster Hunter, but free and with graphics similar to Fortnite. Here, our goal is to defeat giant monsters to collect their loot and craft items and equipment. Each hunt can last up to 20 minutes and it is possible to play online in co-op mode with up to 4 players.
Dragon's Crown
Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita
Dragon's Crown is a 2D platform RPG that basically boils down to dungeon exploration where you can battle different creatures and get new items. Multiplayer mode is unlocked after players complete a certain part of the game. From there, it is possible to play with up to 4 players in cooperative mode (with greatly increased difficulty level) or even PVP.
FantasyGrounds
Platforms: Microsoft Windows and Linux
Finally, a different option. Fantasy Grounds is one of the biggest online tabletop RPG platforms in the world. The site has more RPG licenses than any other and has support for more than 20 systems like D&D, D&D Classic, Vampire, Traveller, Pathfinder and others. The platform also has hundreds of images for you to use with monsters, characters, places, animals, etc., as well as several ready-made maps of caves, dungeons and tunnels.
